Thor: Ragnarok Review - Cinema Spotlight

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Although the movie was titled Thor: Ragnarok, I honestly feel like what I'm actually doing right now is writing a review for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Even before the movie actually released, every preview gave off that same vibe, so it was kind of expected. But there was still something missing from the movie. With Guardians of the Galaxy, we're walking into a movie that's more of a comedy than it is an action film. But they still satisfy their audiences with enough action and drama that it isn't the thing we feel. It's the working formula Marvel has stuck to since the beginning, but Thor: Ragnarok fell short of that.

Walking into the movie, I had high hopes and high expectations. The title alone hinted that the movie was going to be extremely important since ya know, Ragnarok is the end of times and all. Then through previews, we find out that we're going to get a little bit of 'Planet Hulk' in there as well. Then, on top of all that, we got that curveball of an end credit scene at the end of Spiderman: Homecoming hinting that Doctor Strange would be playing a major role in the film.

Having finally seen the movie, I would give it a solid 7 out of 10. I really enjoyed the movie, and still, highly recommend seeing it in theaters to get the full experience, But, I just wasn't fully satisfied with the way they did everything. The jokes were hilarious, but it was too much humor. Every moment that had the potential to be a serious and intense moment, turned into a one-liner. Where moments that were intended to be intense or serious, seemed half-assed.

A perfect example of this would be Odin's death. What they were going for was great; a heartfelt moment between the three of them in a place that should have been important to them. Instead, we got a poorly written conversation between the three characters on a random hill, ending with a death that reminded me of Kung Fu Panda when Master Oogway died; except Kung Fu Panda did it better. Probably what should have been one of the most important moments int he entire Marvel Universe, got 100% rushed and fell way short of what it could have been; that along with so many other scenes being the same way just left me feeling like I missed something.

There were also a couple important things that went totally unexplained. For one how did Loi manage to trick Odin? I get that he's the " God of Mischief", but we're also talking about the god of all gods. To just skip over the whole process of Loki getting Odin to earth in the first place just seems kind of lazy. Secondly, are we supposed to just accept the fact that the Quinn Jet's are capable of deep space travel all of the sudden? We never get any explanation as to how Hulk somehow made it all the way out into the middle of nowhere, other than the assumption that the Quinn Jet got him there. Which again, just seems like something that got lazily skipped over.

But don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed the movie. Even though there was an excessive amount of humor in it, it was all still hilarious. Loki's reaction to Thor getting rag-dolled by Hulk was hands down my favorite. All of the jokes on top of the amazing visuals and action scenes made for a great ride. Not the ride I was expecting to get on, but nonetheless a great one.

Considering the Thor movies haven't exactly been the most popular ones of the franchise, I can see why they tried something totally new. But, there are still a few tweaks that needed to be made. Again, definitely still a solid 7/10 and I will continue to tell people it's worth seeing it in theaters, but not to walk in with as high of expectations as I did.
